- Wood Flooring’s Low Carbon Footprint
The release of carbon dioxide during a products manufacture and use is referred to as its “CARBON FOOTPRINT”. Coal, oil, natural gas & wood all contain solid carbon that becomes carbon dioxide gas when the material is burned for energy. Because carbon dioxide release contributes to climate change, and the need to conserve our energy resources, there is a desire to reduce the footprint of products and to choose products with a smaller carbon footprint. When a young forest is growing, it produces one ton of oxygen and absorbs 1.4 tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of wood.
The Wood Product Carbon Impact Equation: A – B – C –D = E
The carbon footprint of a product can be calculated by measuring and categorizing all the energy inputs. Calculating the carbon footprint of wood products require special considerations. Wood manufacturing facilities, like terra legno’s ISO 9001 2008 and 14000 Certified facilities use of bio-energy, the products manufacturing is very energy efficient. For these reasons, most wood products have a negative carbon foot print, their use actually results in a net carbon storage.
The carbon impacts of wood products can be measured using the simple formula as follows: A – B – C –D = E
A – MANUFACTURING – B – BIO-FUEL – C – CARBON STORAGE – D – SUBSTITUTION = E – TOTAL CARBON FOOTPRINT or CARBON CREDIT
